Dystrophic changes in the structure of the articular-ligamentous apparatus are one of the main causes of pain in the skeleton.In addition to hernias, osteochondrosis, there are a number of other degenerative diseases that affect the joints and bones of the spine.These include spondylarthrosis.Unlike pathologies that directly destroy intervertebral discs, this disease is characterized by degenerative changes in the components of the vertebral joint.
What is spondylarthrosis?
The diagnosis of spondylarthrosis characterizes degenerative changes in the joints of the spine.The vertebra consists of several components: the body, the arch and 4 articular processes.The processes are connected to each other, forming a joint, which, together with the intervertebral discs, provides stability to the spine.With spondylarthrosis, the articular elements begin to collapse, affecting the entire joint and, above all, the articular cartilage.Most often, the disease accompanies the destruction of discs and develops in parallel with osteochondrosis.
Causes of pathology
The following factors lead to the development of spondylarthrosis:
constant static loads on the spine (sedentary work);
intense physical activity;
excessive mobility of individual segments of the spine;
obesity;
violation of metabolic processes in the body;
trauma and surgery;
congenital malformations of the spine.
Stages of the disease
In its development, spondylarthrosis goes through 3 stages:
The first stage is almost asymptomatic, it can manifest itself as sensations of stiffness in the back, dull pain from exertion or a long stay in one position.
At the second stage, dystrophic changes in the joint become more pronounced, which is manifested by pain after waking up, during movement, and impaired mobility.
The third degree of spondylarthrosis is characterized by constant burning pain.At this stage, the growth of osteophytes occurs, which leads to the development of radicular syndrome (compression of the roots) and the appearance of neurological symptoms (numbness, tingling, dizziness when the neck is affected, etc.).
Varieties of spondylarthrosis of the spine
Spondyloarthrosis is classified depending on the area affected by the joints.There are the following types:
lumbar;
cervical;
chest.
Arthrosis of the intervertebral joints of the cervical region often develops in the upper and middle third of the cervical region.Diseases of the discs in the thoracic spine are much less common than in the cervical and lumbar regions.
What are the worrying signs?
The main symptoms of spondylarthrosis include:
morning stiffness in the spine;
aching pain of different localization, depending on the site of the lesion (may appear in different parts of the back, aggravated by walking, playing sports);
severe discomfort from a long stay in one position.
Diagnostics
Diagnosis begins with a visit to a neurologist.He conducts an examination, listens to the patient’s complaints and prescribes the necessary instrumental examinations:
radiography;
MRI;
CT.
The conducted studies will help determine the localization of dystrophic processes, the degree of their spread.
Treatment of spondylarthrosis is complex and depends on the localization of degenerative changes and their stage.The goal of therapy is to eliminate the pain syndrome, restore the joints to their former mobility, ease of movement without stiffness.
With severe pain, the patient is prescribed anti-inflammatory and painkillers.Nevertheless, the basis of treatment is rehabilitation procedures: physiotherapy, massage, restorative physical exercises.
Massagehelps relieve muscle hypertonicity, which increases pain.The procedures also restore normal blood circulation, improving the supply of damaged tissues.According to the results of the massage course, tension is removed from the affected spine..
The ®Spine Ambulatory has also developed physiotherapy rehabilitation programs aimed at restoring patients diagnosed with spondyloarthrosis.All treatment is drug-free and based on evidence-based methods.Physiotherapists-rehabilitologists work with patients.Basic ways of working:
restorative kinesiotherapy (you perform rehabilitation exercises on special simulators under the supervision of a doctor);
traction of the spine (this rehabilitation procedure is performed on a special simulator, relaxing the muscles and correcting the deformed sections of the spine).
Experienced physical rehabilitation therapists are waiting for you at the ®Spine Ambulatory to develop an effective recovery program.The course of therapy is compiled individually based on the general condition of the patient, the stage of development of spondyloarthrosis, the individual characteristics of the organism.All procedures are performed under the supervision of a doctor and help to effectively deal with the disease without the use of medicines.
