About the disease
Intercostal neuralgia is a constraint, perhaps the suppression of the nerves between the ribs in the chest area. This type of neuralgia often causes acute sharp pain in the sternum and most often, neuralgia is manifested in the average, senior and retirement age. Intercostal neuralgia can be exacerbated after sleep in one posture, with constant spasm of the muscles, with an incorrect sharp turn in the lying, sitting or standing position, with prolonged stay throughout, with severe physical strain.
Appearance of intercostal neuralgia is facilitated by the following reasons:
- scoliosis (curvature of the spine of varying degrees);
- intervertebral hernia (precisely in the thoracic spine);
- osteochondrosis at different stages;
- strong infectious diseases: flu, herpes;
- problems of the cardiovascular system: hypertension, anemia;
- deterioration of the nervous system;
- inflammation of the joints;
- fractures of the vertebrae (compression and others);
- diabetes;
- pulmonary diseases.
Symptoms
Intercostal neuralgia is complicated by the fact that the symptoms almost completely correspond to the symptoms of diseases of the internal organs. Often, doctors with little work experience confuse intercostal neuralgia with heart problems, angina pectoris. Also, the symptoms of neuralgia may resemble renal colic, be identical to pleurisy, cholecystitis. However, it’s easier to diagnose neuralgia if you clearly identify symptoms:
- severe ache in the sternum;
- sharp pain on the left or right in the chest;
- the pain becomes unbearable in an active movement, an attempt to breathe deeply, change the position;
- pain “give” in adjacent areas of the body – the heart or other internal organs, limbs, neck, in the region of shoulder blades or lumbar;
- there is a change in the color of the skin or muscle twitching;
- sweating is increased;
- disturbed sensitivity of areas of the body in the area of the breast;
- there is numbness of the skin directly near the patient’s nerve.
Signs of intercostal neuralgia are manifested in the form of heart pain in women. And in men, pain is observed in the area of the lower edges to the left.
Diagnosis of neuralgia
Diagnosis of intercostal neuralgia is a labor-intensive process. Only a complex examination can help distinguish this type of neuralgia from heart disease, infectious diseases or diseases of the internal organs.
